SARA ART 2024

A Fundraising Event for SARA NY Student Scholarships

On October 9-11, 2024 SARA NY hosted our 2nd annual SARA ART Exhibition at Brickworks Design Studio, sponsored by Sherwin Williams. We had over 150 guests in attendance on our opening night reception where we celebrated the artwork of architects, interior designers, landscape architects, civil engineers, and student architects. 40 artists participated in SARA ART and showcased 100 pieces, curated by SARA NY Executive Director, Justin Brown. Submissions, entry fees, and art sales contributed to more than $6,000 raised for the SARA NY Scholarship fund. We also had the honor of hosting an amazing conversation with architect Gabriel Calatrava, Founder of CAL (Collaborative Architecture Laboratory). SARA NY Board President Christian Bailey moderated this discussion. We would like to thank everyone who attended and participated in this year’s exhibition. We look forward to many of you submitting artwork for next year’s SARA ART, to be held in fall of 2025.

SARA ART 2024 - Artists/Artwork

EDL Vertical Mazraa’-

Iyad Abou Gaida

EDL Vertical Mazraa’ EDL Vertical Mazraa’ reimagines the Electricity of Lebanon (EDL) headquarters as a dystopian vertical farm, highlighting the cynical irony of Beirut’s power struggles. In August 2018, a scandal erupted when it was discovered that the EDL building housed a makeshift chicken coop. While Beirut endured blackouts of over ten hours daily, this coop enjoyed round-the-clock electricity, intensifying public outrage over the stark contrast between state luxuries and its failures. This piece critiques not just a local scandal but the broader failings of modernization and colonial projects in the Levant. The term Mazraa’ means farm in Arabic but is colloquially used to describe the chaotic state of governmental institutions. By turning the EDL headquarters into a vertical farm, EDL Vertical Mazraa, captures the absurdity and frustration of a system where institutional inefficiencies and corruption overshadow the basic needs of its people. This artwork challenges viewers to reflect on the tangled intersections of politics, infrastructure, colonial, post-colonial and public trust in the modernization project.

mqrs-01 - Shahab Heidari Faroughi

In these works, I explore the intersections of technology, nature, and cultural heritage using generative design tools and AI platforms. Each piece emerges from a fusion of CGI-generated imagery or AI-generated visuals, standing in a space between organic forms, traditional Iranian architectural elements, and Farsi calligraphy. By blending these influences, I aim to create ambiguous, almost otherworldly images that resist easy categorization. These works inhabit a liminal space where the boundaries between nature and human-made structures blur, inviting viewers to interpret and unravel layers of cultural references and abstract forms.

Black Beauty - Tanaya Gawade

Acrylic on Canvas - 7.90 x 9.85

“Black Beauty” is a masterful depiction of the elusive black panther, inspired by a renowned photograph captured by wildlife photographer Shaaz Jung. In this striking piece, artist navigates the complexities of working with black hues, using varying shades and textures to bring the panther’s sleek, muscular form to life. The play of light on the panther's fur is meticulously rendered, highlighting the animal's graceful movement and intense gaze. Along with the skillful manipulation of black tones, another focal point of this artwork is the panther’s mesmerizing eyes, which seem to pierce through the canvas with their vivid intensity. These eyes, rendered in captivating detail, draw the viewer in, creating a powerful connection with the wild majesty of the creature. Black Beauty invites viewers to explore the beauty of black and the enigmatic beauty of this majestic creature, offering a profound visual experience that celebrates the elegance and power of wildlife.
